KMC Validates Climate Action Plan (2026–2035)

The Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) today held an internal validation session of the Kanifing Municipality Climate Action Plan (2026–2035) at the Council Chambers.

The Regional Climate Action Plan (RCAP) 2026–2035 sets out a comprehensive and forward-looking roadmap to address the growing climate risks facing Kanifing Municipality, while promoting low-carbon development, inclusive growth, and improved urban service delivery.

As the most densely populated urban area in The Gambia, Kanifing is highly vulnerable to climate hazards such as flooding, heat stress, windstorms, coastal impacts, waste-related pollution, and public health risks. These challenges are further intensified by rapid urbanisation, infrastructure pressure, and rising energy demand.

The RCAP responds by integrating climate mitigation, adaptation, disaster risk reduction, ecosystem restoration, and governance reforms into one coordinated strategy. Its overarching vision is to build a climate-resilient, low-emission, and inclusive municipality, where communities and economic activities are better protected from climate shocks while benefiting from clean energy, sustainable infrastructure, healthy ecosystems, and green jobs.

The plan is fully aligned with national and international frameworks, including The Gambia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), National Climate Change Policy, Long-Term Low Emissions Development Strategy, National Disaster Risk Management Framework, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—ensuring strong coherence between local action and national priorities.
