Mayor Talib Bensouda Leads Inspection Tour of KMC Development and Environmental Projects
Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda on Thursday morning led a high-level inspection tour of several key municipal development and environmental project sites across the municipality, reaffirming the council’s commitment to improving infrastructure, promoting environmental sustainability, and strengthening community development.
The working visit took the mayor and his delegation to the Charles Jow Memorial Academy, the Bakoteh Dumpsite and Tyre Recycling Plant, the Bakau Compost Plant, and the Bakau Women’s Garden. The delegation included Deputy Mayor Binta Janneh Jallow and KMC Chief Executive Officer Pa Sait Ceesay, alongside senior council officials and technical staff.
The first stop was the Charles Jow Memorial Academy, where the delegation inspected the ongoing construction of the Charles Jow Assembly Hall. Once completed, the modern facility is expected to serve as a multipurpose venue for school activities, educational programmes, and community events. Council officials expressed satisfaction with the progress of the construction and reiterated that the project will provide an important space for learning and public engagement.
The delegation later proceeded to the Bakoteh Dumpsite to assess operations at the council’s tyre recycling facility. During the visit, officials showcased a tyre recycling machine funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which converts discarded tyres into reusable materials. The recycled products can be used in the production of paving blocks and other construction materials, while also contributing to road construction and various manufacturing processes. The initiative forms part of KMC’s broader efforts to reduce waste, promote recycling, and encourage a circular economy within the municipality.
The inspection tour concluded at the Bakau Compost Plant and the nearby Bakau Women’s Garden, where the delegation observed the installation of a new industrial composting machine. The facility is expected to transform organic waste into high-quality organic fertilizer, providing a sustainable source of compost for agricultural production and supporting farming activities at the women’s garden.
Speaking during the tour, Mayor Bensouda emphasized the importance of investing in projects that improve public services, protect the environment, and create sustainable opportunities for local communities. He noted that initiatives such as modern waste management, recycling, and compost production are essential to building a cleaner, greener, and more resilient municipality.
The inspection formed part of the council’s routine monitoring of ongoing projects to ensure quality implementation, timely completion, and effective delivery of services that benefit residents across the Kanifing Municipality.
