Local Migration Governance Indicators Profile 2022 | Municipality of Kanifing

0

This post outlines the findings of an assessment conducted in Kanifing using the Local Migration Governance Indicators (MGI). It offers an overview of the city’s migration governance structures, highlighting both areas of strength and those in need of improvement as assessed by the Local MGI.

The increasing role of cities and municipalities in migration governance, driven by rapid urbanization and the significance of cities as migration and displacement destinations, is emphasized. In 2016, UN Member States endorsed the New Urban Agenda (NUA) during the Habitat III Conference in Quito, Ecuador, recognizing the pivotal role of local governments in managing migration at the grassroots level and in achieving the urban objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 11.

To facilitate dialogue among different levels of government on migration governance, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has adapted the MGI to the local level, resulting in the creation of the Local MGI.
