The Department of Services oversees the daily operation of the Environment and Sanitation Unit and the Community Services Unit.
ENVIRONMENT AND SANITATION UNIT
The Environment and Sanitation Unit is responsible for the collection, transportation and disposal of waste in the municipality. The Environment and Sanitation Unit is responsible for the day-to-day collection and management of waste in Kanifing municipality. The Unit is the steward and main implementing body for the Council’s Waste Management Plan (2017 – 2021). Some of the activities undertaken by the Unit include:
- Routine residential collection of waste
- Clearing illegal communal dumpsites
- Daily collection of market waste
- Daily collection of wet waste from public facilities (i.e. schools, markets, mosques, etc.)
- Cleaning and dislodging of drains
- Daily street cleaning
- Collection of medical waste from public health facilities
- Management of the Bakoteh dumpsite
- Daily upkeep of markets and public toilets
COMMUNITY SERVICES UNIT
The Community Services Unit is responsible for the facilitation of community development projects for the Council. The Community Services Unit is headed by a Manager and is charged with coordinating and facilitating development initiatives, in addition to reviewing and updating Community Action Plan (CAPs), which are generated by each of the 19 wards.
The work of the Community Services Unit is complemented by technical support from the Ministry of Lands & Regional Government’s (MoLRG) Department of Community Development, which provides technical advice to the Council, while promoting community participation in the Council’s activities. The Unit’s collaboration with MoLRG’s Department of Community Development involves supporting Community Empowerment Initiatives, such as capacity building and training’s on decentralized structures.
